2023 Review: Environmental Success Stories

Another year has ended, and our municipal team has initiated and completed several projects in 2023. From planting trees to fighting climate change and educating residents, our commitment to the environment remains essential to the municipality.

 

Here's an overview of our many wins!

 

Planting trees and shrubs on the territory

  • Rehabilitation of chemin de la Rivière to protect riverbanks and limit erosion of sediment into the environment while revegetating the banks by planting around 10,000 trees and shrubs;
  • Free distribution of 1,000 shrubs to residents during the Chelsea Days;
  • Planting 32 trees and 16 shrubs during the replacement of the cross culvert on the Voie Verte Chelsea pathway to stabilize the pathway embankment;
  • Planting 30 shrubs to create a barrier between chemin de la Montagne and the hill built for the Hollow Glen Community Park winter slide.

 

Combating climate change

  • Follow-up on four Fonds Vert projects;
  • Action report on reducing heat islands in the area;
  • Start of the conservation and protection plan for 30% of the territory in collaboration with ACRE;
  • Sampling, with the help of 20 volunteers, of the various lakes and watercourses on the territory as part of the H2O program - Surface water component;
  • 87 inspections of riparian buffer strips along the Gatineau River;
  • Continuation of the environmental characterization study of the banks of the Gatineau River for the planning of public access to the Gatineau River;
  • Drainage work on chemin de la Paix to limit the spread of invasive plants in ditches.

 

Education

  • Participation in the Défi des Collines (May without lawnmowers) with all the municipalities in the MRC des Collines de l'Outaouais;
  • Organization of a recycling awareness workshop with Tricentris for residents;
  • Insect discovery activity with children at the library.

 

Visibility

  • Participation in the development of the regional Water Master Plan - Agence de bassin versant des 7;
  • Participation as an expert in the provincial Programme d'excellence en lutte contre les changements climatiques (PEXCC);
  • Participation as a panellist at the ISFORT symposium in Ripon - Conservation issues for local communities.

 

Citizen services

  • Start of installation of new readers on water meters to better monitor water consumption in the urban perimeter of the Centre-Village;
  • 218 residents had their well water analyzed;
  • Organization of two collections of invasive and dangerous plants;
  • Installation of the Electrobac at the Town Hall for electronic waste;
  • 48 residents tested for radon;
  • Set up a community clean-up for Earth Day.
