Active transportation: new measures to improve road safety in Chelsea

August 18, 2025

As part of its Active Transportation Master Plan, the Municipality of Chelsea is implementing new measures to make the municipal road network safer and more accessible, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with reduced mobility.

These concrete initiatives are part of an inclusive, preventive, and sustainable mobility approach aimed at improving connectivity across the territory. To this end, targeted measures have been taken, particularly on busy routes or those presenting specific safety issues.

  • Chemin de la Mine: reinforcement of signage and speed reduction measures near pedestrian crossings and recreational trails; addition of speed limit reminders and boundary markers in critical areas (curves and areas with reduced visibility).
  • Chemin Kingsmere: Installation of Ped-zone (pedestrian area bollard) to secure pedestrian crossings and development of safe corridors to ensure continuity of bike paths with other sections of surrounding roads.
  • Chemin du Lac Meech: Installation of Ped-zone (pedestrian area bollard) along the road, from Chemin Scott to Gatineau Parkway, to safely connect the bike path in this busy area.

In the short and long term, other actions are also planned at the following intersections:

  • Chemin Gleaneagle and Route 105
  • Chemin Vincent and Chemin Old Chelsea
  • Chemin Saint-Clément and Route 105
  • Chemin Blackburn and Route 105
  • Chemin Kelly and Chemin La Montagne

Finally, the Municipality also plans to install fast-flashing rectangular lights (FRCR) at the corner of Chemin Vincent and Chemin Old Chelsea (subject to approval by the ministère des Transports et de la mobilité durable) and in front of the future community dock at Farm Point. Speed cameras will also be installed at certain crosswalks in targeted areas, near schools and high-risk areas.
