Do not let fire ruin your Holiday Season!

December 12, 2014

Fire hazards are still present, even during the holiday season. The Chelsea Fire Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security, remind you of the importance of being vigilant in reiterating some tips to ensure your safety and that of your loved ones.

The smoke alarm

  • Verify proper operation of your smoke alarm. If it is defective or it is installed for more than 10 years old, replace it.

The natural Christmas tree

  • Choose a tree whose needles are green and do not come off easily;
  • Install at a distance of at least one meter from any heat source, such as a baseboard heater or fireplace;
  • Keep the foot of the tree moist by adding water every day;
  • Always turn off the tree lights when you leave home or when you go to bed.

Decorative lights

  • Use decorative lights CSA or ULC;
  • For your outdoor decorations, install decorative lights designed for outdoor use;
  • Use strings of lights in good condition, not cracked and not dried;
  • Fix light strings with tape and never use nails or tacks.

Candles

  • Turn and place your candles away from curtains or other flammable objects;
  • Never leave burning candles unattended;
  • Make sure your candle holders are fire resistant and the base is stable;
  • Keep matches and lighters in a place out of the reach of children.
