Farm Point: a fourth habitat connectivity area along Meech Creek

September 16, 2026

At its September 15, 2026, meeting, Council adopted the by-law establishing a habitat connectivity area along Meech Creek. The new area that covers the land along Meech Creek joins the three connectivity areas already in place in Chelsea: Larrimac, ruisseau Chelsea and Breckenridge.

This adoption is part of the Municipality's ongoing implementation of its strategic plan.

Why habitat connectivity matters

A habitat connectivity area is a sector recognized for the role it plays in allowing wildlife to move and plants to disperse from one habitat core to another. These links let species feed, find shelter and reproduce, instead of becoming isolated on ever-smaller islands of habitat.

Meech Creek plays this role on two scales. Within the Farm Point sector, the creek and the wetlands and woodlands that line it link the area's various natural habitats to one another. On a broader scale, it helps connect two major natural environments in our municipality: Gatineau Park and the Gatineau River.

By recognizing these areas, the Municipality is protecting the natural environments and biodiversity that make Chelsea such a good place to live, so that future generations can enjoy a healthy, sustainable environment.

Protecting nature while allowing responsible development

The approach aims to reconcile two goals: maintaining ecological connectivity and allowing responsible development. Property owners whose land is within the Meech Creek area can continue to carry out their projects, in compliance with the applicable standards.

What this means for property owners

  • A connectivity area is not a protected area where all activity is banned. You can continue to use your property.
  • Some work may be regulated, for example, installing fences or landscaping near the creek.
  • Before planning any work, check which standards apply to your property with the Urban Planning Department.

The adopted boundary takes into account the comments received during the August 2026 public consultation. Thank you to all residents who took the time to take part.
