Gatineau Park Parkways to Close at 6 p.m. for the Season

October 26, 2018

This evening, the Gatineau Park parkway network (Gatineau, Champlain, Fortune Lake and Philippe Lake parkways) will close to motorists for the season on Friday, October 26, 2018, at 6 pm. The early closure is a result of the special weather statement issued this morning by Environment Canada for a mixture of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain this weekend. Cyclists, in-line skaters and pedestrians are asked to exercise caution.

The Luskville Falls access road will close to motorists for the season as previously scheduled on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at 6pm.

To visit Gatineau Park this weekend, the Luskville Falls, the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, and the parking lots along Meech Lake Road and in Kingsmere will remain accessible.

QUICK FACTS

·         Gatineau Park closes its parkways earlier as a safety precaution, as the risk of frozen and icy roads increases with lower temperatures.

·         Gatineau Park does not use salt or grit on the roadways as a measure to help protect the environmentally sensitive Park environment and vegetation.

·         During the winter season, Gatineau Park Parkways become winter trails.

·         The parkways in Gatineau Park close for the season on the fourth Sunday in October, at 6 pm and, barring contrary notifications, are expected to reopen on the first Friday in May (May 3, 2019) at noon.

·         The grounds of the Mackenzie King Estate will remain open all winter (access via Barnes Road).

·         Gatineau Park has one of the largest networks of winter trails in North America- located just minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau. Gatineau Park season pass holders will enjoy exclusive offers at more than 20 local retailers, sports shops, restaurants, accommodations and well-being centres, simply by showing their season pass.
