COVID-19 : A Word from Mayor Caryl Green

March 24, 2020

A Word from Mayor Caryl Green

In this time of pandemic, Chelsea residents are called upon to stay home and respect social distancing measures in the face of the urgent COVID-19 situation. Together, we are doing our best to respect these measures in order to flatten the curve and maintain the capacity of the health care system so that those in need can receive all the care they require.

Quebec, Canada and the entire world are on pause for the next few weeks, and we must remain united. Our municipal offices, as well as our businesses, are closed except for priority services and local restaurants offering take-out food. Gatineau Park has also decided to close to visitors as of Monday evening, March 23. While our municipal parks remain open, we will be closing the play structures immediately throughout our region.

In solidarity with other elected officials in the Outaouais, I therefore ask all residents and visitors to travel only for reasons deemed essential. Respect the measures in place in our municipalities and be aware of the impact of your actions on our neighbours and on our health services.

Spring is on our doorstep and there is a great temptation to get out of the house. I understand that. But today we must act together for our fellow residents who need us. We must rally together and be strong and brave in the face of the virus.

Basically all I am asking is to wait before moving between neighbourhoods, between municipalities and between regions so that we can better welcome you in the future.

Message to Chelsea residents

During this exceptional period, I would like to inform you that, as mayor, I am in constant contact with the UMQ, the CISSSO, the other mayors and wardens in order to follow the evolution of the situation and to react to the latest developments. I am also making sure to relay the information to the municipal council as well as to municipal employees so that we can keep you up to date via the municipal Web site.

The situation is evolving extremely quickly and we are called upon to make decisions every day to protect you and our municipal employees and to collaborate with the various levels of government. I would also like to assure you that despite the closing of offices, the employees continue to work on key issues and stay the course so that the situation has the least possible impact on our municipality.

I invite you to stay informed by following the official sources of the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada. We have also set up a page on our Web site to centralize information and answer your questions. This page is updated daily.

Finally, I would like to thank the municipal council for their availability and for their help in relaying information on their Facebook accounts and by email. Your help is invaluable in this context.

The situation is exceptional, but as Mr. Legault has said, we will win this battle together.

Sincerely,

Caryl Green
Mayor
