Elementary School in Chelsea: Mayor Condemns Quebec’s Latest Neglect of the Outaouais Region

I am deeply disappointed and outraged to see that the Outaouais region is, once again, being neglected by the Quebec government.

While Montreal, the Capitale-Nationale, and other regions of Quebec see their projects move forward and receive investments, the Outaouais continues to fall further behind in terms of provincial infrastructure and investments. Yet our population is growing rapidly, our schools are overflowing, and our families are already feeling the consequences of a glaring lack of school infrastructure. How much longer will we have to wait?

In Chelsea, we face this reality every day. Our elementary school is at full capacity, and many of our children will have to be transported to Gatineau because there are no spots available in their own community.

The Municipality of Chelsea has invested nearly $5 million to acquire the land for the future French-language elementary school. We’ve done our part. Today, we’re still being asked to wait. This is unacceptable.

How can we reasonably expect a child to be fully prepared to learn when they spend up to 45 minutes on the bus in the morning and another 45 minutes in the evening, five days a week? That amounts to nearly an hour and a half of daily commuting—time that should be devoted to homework, extracurricular activities, or simply family life. This reality has a very real impact on our young people’s fatigue, concentration, and learning conditions. It is simply unacceptable in modern Quebec society.

A new elementary school is not just a building. It is the foundation of our children’s education. It is where they develop their learning, their confidence, and their desire to succeed. It is the heart of a community. We have a collective responsibility to provide them with the best possible conditions to get off on the right foot.
The residents of Chelsea and the Outaouais are Quebecers. They pay the same taxes as all Quebecers. They deserve the same services and the same investments. We are not asking for a privilege; we are asking for fairness.

The Quebec government must stop treating the Outaouais as a second-class region. Announcements, promises, and studies are no longer enough. Our families need concrete action—now.

I am addressing the Premier of Quebec, the Minister of Education, and all the members of the National Assembly representing the Outaouais directly. It is time to defend our region with conviction and secure the investments our people deserve.

The Outaouais is a region that contributes fully to Quebec’s prosperity. Our citizens work, start businesses, and contribute to our collective wealth. In return, they have every right to expect fair treatment. Today, that is not the case.

Enough is enough.

Our children deserve the same opportunities for success as all children in Quebec. The Outaouais finally deserves the respect, recognition, and investments to which it is entitled.
