Drinking water supply problem due to low water level in the Gatineau River

May 17, 2022

The Municipality of Chelsea has been informed of the consequences that some residents are experiencing as a result of the lowering of the water level in the Gatineau River by Hydro-Quebec for work at the Chelsea hydroelectric station. Indeed, some residents have mentioned that this situation prevents them from getting drinking water.

In order to remedy the situation and to ensure the health and safety of the population, we invite residents affected by this lack of drinking water to contact us by sending an email with their contact information to info@chelsea.ca. Municipal staff will then provide information on how to obtain drinking water until the situation is resolved.

On April 27, Hydro-Quebec announced that it would have to undertake repairs to the Chelsea hydroelectric station, including the dam deck, access points and emergency exits. In order to do so, Hydro-Quebec had to lower the water level to 96 meters from April to May and will have to lower it for a second time during three weeks next fall. For any questions regarding the rehabilitation project, Hydro-Québec invites residents to contact the project information line at 1 800 465-1521, extension 6022.
