The Municipality and the Chelsea Foundation sign an agreement for the purchase of land for the future primary school

The Municipality of Chelsea and the Chelsea Foundation are pleased to announce the conclusion of an agreement for the purchase of land for the construction of Chelsea’s new French-language primary school (School 039). The signing took place on August 26 at City Hall in the presence of Pierre Guénard, Mayor of Chelsea, Me Sheena Miano, Director General and Registrar-Treasurer of the Municipality of Chelsea, Fiona Duguid, President of the Chelsea Foundation, and Peter Sudermann, Treasurer of the Chelsea Foundation.

Negotiations between the Municipality of Chelsea and the Chelsea Foundation, for the acquisition of land for School 039, commenced in June 2023, and concluded successfully last week. Following a joint appraisal, both parties reached a mutual agreement for a total amount of $990,000 for two plots of land owned by the Chelsea Foundation, in the heart of Chelsea’s Centre-Village.

“This investment reflects our commitment to education and Chelsea’s youth. Since the announcement of the construction of a new school in Chelsea in June 2023, we have worked very hard to make this project a unifying one for the community, and today we are very pleased with the signing of this agreement, which is the first step towards building our new school. The 16-classroom French-language primary school will accommodate approximately 380 students from kindergarten to Grade 6, and we hope for its timely opening in 2026,” said Mayor Pierre Guénard.

The Chelsea Foundation welcomes the new school in the area. “We are happy to have found a win/win scenario for the Municipality and the Foundation that reflects the needs of the community,” states Fiona Duguid, president of the Chelsea Foundation. Just over two acres of Foundation land will be used for the school, while preserving the soccer fields and green space that Chelsea residents established over 20 years ago. “We look forward to working with the Municipality, the CSSPO and the new principal to ensure parking availability for the community, reciprocal access to community school facilities and green spaces, and other opportunities.”

The Municipality, CSSPO, and Chelsea Foundation will work together to ensure access and safety throughout the design and construction phases through to September 2026.
