During the week, the Chelsea Fire Department will raise awareness and encourage all citizens to practice their evacuation plan which increases their chances of escaping unharmed from a fire, by doing:

1 - Check the smoke alarm and ensure proper operation;

2 - Prepare your evacuation plan;

3 - Practice evacuating you home

Great Escape

The entire population of Quebec is invited to participate in the third edition of the Great Escape which will take place on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 pm.

Thus, throughout Quebec, families will practice, as soon as they are warned, evacuate their residence by applying their evacuation plan. To prepare for this activity, families can visit the Department of Public Safety at www.securitepublique.gouv.qc.ca where, in addition to tips, tools are available to create their evacuation plan.

Did you know?

According to the Ministry of Public Safety, since the commercialization of the smoke alarm in the early 1980s, the number of deaths in fires has decreased. It is currently below 40 deaths per year on average, compared to about 180 before the arrival of the alarm.

Most deaths in a fire are related to smoke.  Indeed, 3 minutes is the time it may take for smoke to suffocate a person. It is therefore crucial to quickly get out of a burning house. Having an evacuation plan avoids committing, in panic, irreparable mistakes.
