The Municipality would like to remind its residents of the importance of consulting the SOPFEU risk index for the region, even before starting an open fire. Depending on the index in effect, everyone must adapt their behavior according to the different levels and the municipal regulations.
You will now find the risk index on the home page of the municipal Web site where it is easily accessible.
However, please note that if a preventive measure such as a suspension of a burning permit or a ban on open fires is issued by the Municipality, it has priority over the SOPFEU danger indicator.
Here's how to adapt your behaviour to each level, and to municipal regulations:
LOW (blue): Low intensity fire risk with limited spread. This is a good time to light your campfire.
MODERATE (green): Moderate risk of surface fire with moderate spread and generally well controlled, only small fires (1m X 1m maximum).
HIGH (yellow): Moderate to vigorous surface fire risk that poses control challenges during ground combat, do not light if wind speed is greater than 20 km/hr.
Do not light if the wind speed is higher than 15 km/h.
VERY HIGH (orange): High intensity fire risk with partial or complete ignition of crowns where conditions at the front are beyond the capability of ground crews, build fires only in facilities equipped with a prescribed spark arrestor, applicable to Chelsea.
EXTREME (red): High intensity, high velocity, potentially uncontrollable crown fire risk, avoid fires. In Chelsea: total ban on all types of fires, including fireplaces with sparklers and fireworks.
