Winter Storm Warning: Be Prepared

December 21, 2022

Environment Canada's winter storm warning for the region, effective December 22, could cause power outages and complicate travel. Municipal teams will be monitoring the storm closely over the next few days and remain on standby to respond at any time. However, it is possible that snow removal on the roads will take longer than usual, depending on the amount of rain and snow we receive. We ask for your cooperation.

The municipal emergency measures plan provides for a series of interventions in the event that the storm gains in strength or extends over several days. However, it is important to be prepared for any eventuality and to follow some preventive measures.

Staying Informed

Check Environment Canada's weather website www.meteo.gc.ca/canada and regional media frequently for real-time information. Keep a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio handy, as power outages often occur during storms.

Being prepared

Since you may have to manage without power or running water, make sure you are self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Prepare yourself or get an emergency kit, as recommended on the website www.preparez-vous.ca. These can be purchased from organizations such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

It is also advisable to:

  • Refill the bath or boilers for residents whose water comes from a well
  • Recharge your phone
  • Provide gas cans for generators (see safety tips)
  • Arrange accommodation (friends, family, etc.) outside the affected area, if necessary

Keep the emergency kit in a bag, easy to carry, and in a place that is accessible to everyone in the house.

  • Drinking water (2 liters per person per day for 3 days);
  • Non-perishable food (for at least 3 days);
  • Hand can opener;
  • Battery operated radio - spare batteries;
  • Headlamp or flashlight - spare batteries or wind-up flashlight;
  • Electronic devices and accessories to charge them;
  • Lighter or matches and candles;
  • First aid kit - antiseptics, analgesics, adhesive bandages, sterile gauze pads, scissors, etc.;
  • Hygiene items;
  • Toiletries;
  • Toothbrushes;
  • Plastic garbage bags;
  • Hand sanitizer;
  • A change of clothes;
  • Sleeping bags or blankets;
  • Cash in small bills and change for public phones;
  • Keys for the car and the house;
  • Whistle;
  • Multi-purpose pocket knife;
  • Dust mask;
  • Photocopies of important personal papers;
  • Identification;
  • Insurance policy;
  • Prescription medications;
  • Safety plan and emergency contact list.

If needed, consider including the following items as well:

  • Baby items - formula, bottles, food, disposable diapers, clothing, etc;
  • Pet supplies - food, water, medication;
  • Equipment for people with disabilities.

In all cases, customize your kit to suit your needs.
