Chelsea obtains Bronze VELOSYMPATHIQUE certification

January 13, 2020

The Municipality of Chelsea announces that it has been awarded the Vélo Québec Bronze VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE certification. This certification recognizes the efforts of communities working for the well-being of their citizens by making cycling a true transportation and recreation option. This certification is effective until 2024.

In 2016, the Municipality of Chelsea applied for VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE certification, and its commitment to the development of a cycling culture was recognized with an honorable mention. Upon reading Vélo Québec's detailed feedback report, the Municipality implemented the recommendations and continued its efforts to develop a cycling culture in Chelsea. It is therefore with great enthusiasm that the Municipality receives a Bronze Mention, as it represents the fruit of everyone's efforts over the past few years.

Recently the Municipality has :

  • Added  bicycle lanes on Notch and de la Mine roads
  • Removed the rails from the community pathway to provide a 20.5 km unpaved cycling zone
  • Made available to residents more than 360 bicycle parking areas
  • Purchased two bicycle repair stations
  • Opened a pump track at the Meredith Centre and a bike accessible skatepark at Farm Point Park

The Municipality has now close to 80 km of road bike networks and 112 km of mountain bike trails on its territory!

About the VELOSYMPATHIQUE movement

The VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE movement is a Vélo Québec program that encourages communities and organizations to make cycling a real transportation and recreation option for everyone. Through a rigorous certification process, it offers tools and a support service to communities and organizations working to promote cycling.

The VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE movement is a project carried out thanks to the financial participation of the Government of Québec as part of the 2013-2020 Climate Change Action Plan, funded by the Green Fund.
