Rules to follow when you walk with your dog

April 3, 2020

The Municipality of Chelsea would like to remind its citizens that when they are in the company of their dog in public places (streets, trails, park, etc.), they must be kept the dog on a leash. The leash must be a maximum length of 1.85 m or 6 feet.  We would also like to remind you that social distancing measures also apply and that it is important to keep your dog close to you.

What you need to know about animals in relation to the COVID-19 crisis (text from the OMVQ):

You may be concerned about your pets' fears about the transmission of this virus. Currently, there is no evidence that pets can be infected with this virus or that they can transmit it to humans. This situation could change over time, but there is no cause for concern at this time.

  • However, since it is known that the virus can survive for a few hours on dry surfaces and longer on wet surfaces (this also varies with temperature), it is logical to assume that the virus will survive for some time on an animal's hair.
  • It is therefore prudent, at this time, to limit your pet's contact with people outside your own circle if it is not necessary (to protect yourself and those around you).
  • When it comes to petting unfamiliar dogs, it is a practice that is not encouraged, and even less so these days.
  • This is not to create additional worry, but simply to realize that the animal's hair can most likely carry the virus for a while, just like an object would.
