Mayor’s Message – June 2026

June 3, 2026

The month of June promises to be particularly dynamic in Chelsea. In recent weeks, the Municipality has continued several important projects aimed at improving our infrastructure, enhancing our recreation offerings, and supporting community initiatives that help make Chelsea an exceptional place to live.

Improved Access to the Gatineau River

As part of our action plan to improve access to the river, a new municipal dock has been installed at Farm Point Park. Residents and visitors can now enjoy this space to take in the Gatineau River and appreciate the beauty of our natural environment.

The installation of an open-water swimming lane is also planned for later this month, providing a new opportunity to enjoy the river.

A New Portal for Activities in Chelsea

To better highlight the richness of our community life, the Municipality has launched a new section titled “What’s On In Chelsea” on its website. Community organizations, partners, and local businesses are invited to post their activities and events there.

This initiative will allow residents to easily discover the many activities offered in our community, while the Municipality will promote them on a regular basis.

An Inspiring Meeting with Olympic Athletes

On May 28, the municipal library welcomed two renowned Olympic athletes: Sophia Jensen, a Chelsea resident, and Rachel Homan from Ottawa.

The event attracted many residents who came to hear their stories and learn about their journeys. Their experience, determination, and passion undoubtedly inspired many young people to pursue their dreams and get involved in sports.

Sports Activities for the Whole Family

The month of June will also feature several sports activities for residents of all ages.

On June 7, an introductory skateboarding activity will be offered at Farm Point Park. Participants will be able to discover this sport in a supervised and safe environment, with all equipment provided on site.

Those interested in trying something new will also have the opportunity to learn pickleball on June 27. This activity will introduce participants to a rapidly growing sport that is gaining popularity across the country.

Recruitment of the Leadership Team

The Municipality is actively continuing the recruitment of key members of its leadership team.

We have completed the recruitment process for the Director General, and we are pleased to announce that Claudine Lacasse has accepted the municipality’s offer. She will begin her duties next Monday.

The recruitment process for the position of Director of Finance and Treasurer has also been completed, and we are equally pleased to announce that Aziz Lahssaini has accepted the municipality’s offer and will begin his duties in July.

As for the clerk, the position had to be reposted following the withdrawal of the selected candidate. We are currently reviewing the applications received.

These hires will help strengthen the municipal administration’s capacity to meet the needs of the population and deliver on Council’s priorities.

Architecture and Design Guide for the Village Centre

Municipal Council has awarded a mandate to develop an architecture and design guide that will guide future development in the Village centre.

This initiative will help better manage growth in the area, preserve Chelsea’s distinctive character, and reinforce its village identity.

The future guide will promote high-quality projects that integrate harmoniously with the natural environment and contribute to creating a vibrant, welcoming, and sustainable village core for future generations.

Investments in the Drinking Water Treatment Plant

Improving the water treatment plant remains one of the Municipality’s priorities.

The action plan to reduce boil water advisories and respond to growing demand continues to move forward. The steps required to carry out the engineering work are ongoing, and the necessary borrowing by-laws will be submitted at the next municipal council meeting.

Residents can consult this news item for more information on the various stages of this important project.

Improving Pedestrian Safety

As part of its efforts to improve the safety of active transportation, the Municipality has installed flashing lights at three strategic pedestrian crossings:

  • On chemin de la Rivière, near the municipal dock;

  • On chemin Scott, near La Cigale;

  • On chemin Kingsmere, at crosswalk No. 4 parking lot.

Two additional installations are planned on chemin d'Old Chelsea once the required government approvals are received.

Road Marking Underway

Road marking and pavement painting are currently underway across the municipal road network and will be completed by the end of June.

With the earlier start this year, the Municipality will be able to install safety bollards along certain roads sooner, helping improve safety for all road users.

Environmental Projects Supported by the Fonds Vert

This year, the municipality’s Green Fund will continue to support several local initiatives that have a positive impact on our environment.

Selected projects include the installation of bike racks at the Meredith Centre, a Japanese knotweed eradication project, and an awareness campaign on invasive and non-native species led by ACRE.

These initiatives reflect our community’s commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices.

Tree Distribution and Invasive Plant Collection

On June 10, residents will be able to participate in the municipal collection of toxic and invasive plants at the municipal garage on Scott Road.

This activity will take place alongside the annual tree distribution, which, each year, allows many residents to contribute to greening their properties and our community.

You can learn more about the available species and instructions for disposing of invasive plants by visiting the event page.

An Invitation to Donate Blood

The Chelsea Fire Department, in collaboration with Héma-Québec, will host a blood drive on June 17 at the Meredith Centre.

I warmly encourage all residents who are able to take part. A single donation can make a significant difference in many people’s lives.

In Closing

Chelsea continues to move forward thanks to the engagement of its residents, volunteers, organizations, and municipal employees. I would like to thank everyone who contributes daily to making our municipality a welcoming, dynamic, and forward-looking place.

I invite you to fully enjoy the many activities offered this month, and I wish you all an excellent start to the summer.
