Residential visits by Firefighters in district 2 and 3

June 18, 2020

The Fire Department wishes to inform residents of District 2 and 3 that Chelsea firefighters will be, in the coming months, conducting residential visits to inform and educate homeowners about the provisions of the Chelsea Fire Prevention By-law.

Due to the pandemic (COVID-19), firefighters will not enter residential properties as they usually do. They will leave a door hanger indicating minimum regulations to be respected. If you see firefighters in your neighborhood, they will be happy to answer all your questions regarding fire prevention, always in respect to physical distancing of 2 meters.

The visits take place on weekdays and weekends, between 9 am and 8 pm.

It is important to note that municipal regulations stipulate that:

  • At least one smoke alarm on each floor is necessary.
  • At least one certified carbon monoxide detector must be installed in each single-family dwelling or each residence, when a combustion device is installed inside the residence or when a parking garage is incorporated or contiguous and when a garage is an integral part of the residence.
  • A portable fire extinguisher ABC dry chemical of 2,2 kg (5 lb) is necessary.
  • A clearance of 1 meter around the electrical panel is mandatory.
  • Your civic number must be visible from the road.
  • The sweeping of the chimney must be done at least once a year.
