As of April 1, 2021, the Highway Safety Code (HSC) allows firefighters to use the flashing green light to identify their personal vehicle when driving to the fire station or to the scene of an incident.
The Municipality of Chelsea authorizes all firefighters (full-time and part-time) of its fire department to use the flashing green light if they have obtained a certificate of authorization from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec.
The flashing green light doesn’t transform the firefighter's personal vehicle into an emergency vehicle. Instead, it identifies firefighters responding to an emergency call while respecting the highway safety code.
The flashing green light is designed to encourage citizens to yield to the firefighter if the situation safely permits. The flashing green light also allows the user to drive on the shoulder to help firefighters get to the fire station or to the scene of an incident more quickly.
