Alarm systems connected to 9-1-1

Many Chelsea residents have a fire alarm system connected to a monitoring center. If an alarm is triggered at your home, your alarm company must contact the 9-1-1 dispatch office of MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais at the following number:

Please inform your alarm company promptly to avoid any delays in responding.

Installation and operation

A permit is required to install and operate an alarm system. The permit is free of charge.

The Collines-de-l'Outaouais Police Department has been managing alarm permits since January 2013.

For additional information or to request a permit, please contact the MRC.

Reducing false fire alarms

In Quebec, nine out of ten fire alarms received by the monitoring centres are unfounded. Sometimes they are due to a deficient installation of the alarm system, poor maintenance or a deficient component. In most cases, they are due to light smoke such as water vapour, cigarette smoke, heating smoke or even dust.

In the event of an unfounded fire alarm, you have 90 seconds to enter your access code to cancel the transmission of the alarm signal to the monitoring center. However, before cancelling the alarm, check the reason for the alarm: real fire, wrong handling, light smoke, etc. Consider any alarm to be valid until proven otherwise.

If smoke or fire is present, evacuate the occupants to the assembly point, then call 9-1-1. Do not go back inside without permission from the fire department.

Tips to avoid false alarms

Have the smoke detectors of the alarm system installed away from sources of smoke or water vapour: kitchen, room with fireplace, bathroom or workshop.

Opt for photoelectric detectors: they are less sensitive to light smoke and steam, which are responsible for many unfounded alarms.

Although activation of the delay function is optional, it is strongly recommended that it be activated inside private property. Check with your monitoring center or the specialist who services it.

It is strongly recommended not to activate it in buildings designed to house people with limited evacuation capacity, such as private seniors' residences.
