Running for office

In Chelsea, two types of positions are open for municipal elections:

  • The position of mayor
  • The position of councilor

The municipality has six electoral districts, each represented by a councilor. You must choose the position you wish to hold before applying.

The role of a municipal elected official is to administer the municipality so that the services provided meet the needs of the population, but also to represent the population and defend its interests.

Nomination period:
September 19 to October 3, 2025

To be eligible to run for office, you must:

  • Be entitled to be registered on the municipality's electoral roll by meeting all of the following criteria on election day:
    • Be 18 years of age or older;
    • Be a Canadian citizen;
    • Not have lost your right to vote due to guardianship;
    • Not have been convicted of electoral fraud in the last five years;
    • Be in one of the following situations:
      • Be a resident of the municipality and have lived in Quebec for at least six months;
      • Be the owner of a building or the occupant of a business establishment located in the municipality for at least 45 days prior to the election date;
  • Reside in the municipality when you file your nomination papers;
  • Not be in a situation of ineligibility.

Important: You are responsible for verifying that you are eligible to run for municipal office.

Please note that candidates are not permitted to use the municipality's brand image, i.e., its coat of arms, visual identity, and logo, for their election campaigns.

The Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities regulates signage during election periods. Consult Chapter VII.1 – Election signage before putting up your election signs.

Because roadside signage can pose safety issues for road users, restrictions apply. Signs must not interfere with pedestrian or vehicle traffic or obscure road signs.

Consult the Election Signs section of the Elections Québec website.
