The Chelsea Library is looking for volunteers in the Library to help on a regular weekly basis with shelving, circulation, cataloguing and introducing new members to the Library.
Library Card
Library cards and services are free of charge for Chelsea residents. Please come to the Library circulation desk to get your new library card and password (to access your account online).
More than Books
You will find more than books at the Library: audio books, DVDs, newspapers and magazines.
Library Online Catalogue
You may access your account through the online catalogue. This will allow you to check what items you have out and when they are due back. You will also be able to extend the borrowing period if no-one is waiting for the item.

Book Returns
You may use the Town Hall drop-off box to return books when the Library is closed. The drop-off box is located behind the Library, at the side entrance to municipal offices.
Computer and Internet Access
Seven high-speed Internet computers are available for public use. You may reserve a computer for one hour at a time. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Children ages 12 to 14 must have written permission from a parent to access the Internet. To reserve a computer, please contact the Library at 819-827-4019
Wireless connection for your laptop
You may use the Library’s free wireless Internet connection from your laptop computer.
Young Volunteers
Teen? Join our team of young volunteers!
Young volunteers meet Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The programme finishes December 15, 2012 and starts again January 12, 2013.
Join our team of young volunteers! If you are between 12 and 17 years old and want to do some volunteering, the Library on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon is the place for you. Contact Samuel at 819-827-4019.
Gatineau Valley Hiltorical Society Archives
January to May 20, 2013, Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 :30 p.m. to 4 :30 p.m. and Thursday evenings 6 to 8 p.m. The Society office and archives are located on the lower level of the Library, and are open to the public. Contact us for questions concerning the history of the area.
Please note that starting May 20th the office will be closed for the summer. You may, however, contact us for an appointment by email at info@gvhs.ca.
Museum Passes
With your Library card you may now borrow a Museum Pass and borrow your way into some of Canada’s premier museums ans cross-country ski in the Gatineau Park.
The passes are on loan for a period of one week from Tuesday to Monday (to take advantage of holiday weekends). It may be picked up on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. and must be returned in person or through the book return slot before 9 am the following Tuesday. Any reserved card that has not been picked up by Thursday 8:00 p.m. may be offered to another borrower.
Library - Rules
Library card
Every resident of Chelsea is entitled to free membership in Chelsea Library.* Members are issued a barcoded library card to be used when borrowing library materials. Your library card identifies you as a member of the Library and using it avoids the possibility of error in checking out books. You are responsible for all items borrowed on your card. Do not lend it to another person.
If your card is lost or stolen a fee of $3.00 will be applied to issue a new one.
*In rare circumstances such as major unpaid fines, books not returned and not reimbursed, or seriously inappropriate behaviour, a person may be barred from Library membership
How to get a Library card
Come to the Library during open hours and bring proof of residence (hydro or telephone bill) and photo identification (driver’s licence, health card or student card). A driver’s licence will fulfill both requirements.
Library Online
To have access to your personal file, please go to the circulation desk with your Library card. The staff member on duty will help you establish your user name and password. With this you will be able to see your personal file, the items you have out and their due date as well as your borrowing history. You may also renew items.
Borrowing
You are responsible for everything borrowed on your card. This includes responsibility for the timely return of all items in the condition in which they were borrowed, as well as for payment of late fees (fines) and replacement and cataloguing costs for lost or damaged materials. Parents are responsible for all materials borrowed by their minor children.
With a few exceptions, all materials borrowed from the Library are on loan for a period of 3 weeks. The loan period may be extended (renewed) three times. There are no renewals permitted for periodicals, for inter-library loans or for materials which have been reserved by another member.
Museum passes are on loan for one week only and may be reserved by telephone. For details please consult the circulation desk or go to

A maximum of 10 items (any combination of materials) may be borrowed at one time, including items which have been previously checked out and renewed items. This maximum may be adjusted from time to time, eg. summer months, the Christmas period, or in special circumstances.

Reservations
Any item in the Chelsea Library collection which is currently in use may be reserved. You will be notified by telephone as soon as it becomes available. If the item is not picked up within one week of the notification it will be passed to the next person on the reservation list or returned to the shelves.
Interlibrary Loans
Books may be borrowed by special request through interlibrary loans. Once notification has been made, the book must be picked up promptly and may not be renewed.
Overdue Items
All materials which are past the return date and which have not been renewed are subject to late fees (fines) of 5¢ per item per day to a maximum of $3.00 per item. Fines are applied only for days when the library is open.
Lost and Damaged Items
Any item more than three months overdue is considered lost. Replacement costs include :
- the current price of the item, new, (or, if this is not available, a default price)
- a $5.00 processing fee
Materials which have suffered more than normal wear and tear, eg. materials which are dirty, sticky, marked, water damaged, moldy, torn, chewed or otherwise defaced and which in the judgement of Library staff cannot be loaned again, must be replaced as if they were lost.
Library Conduct
Chelsea Library offers the community a quiet, welcoming environment in which to read, study, learn and discover. Except for special events and activities, members and visitors are expected to speak softly. If you must use a cell phone please step out of the Library into the hall.
Parents or care-givers are responsible for the behaviour of their children. Children must not run or climb or be left unattended. Library staff are unable to supervise them and provide for their safety.
Consideration for others results in a positive experience for all.
Computers
Chelsea Library is a wireless environment. You may use the Library’s free high-speed wireless Internet connection on your laptop computer.
There are nine computers available free of charge for research and word processing. The cost for printing is 30¢ per page and photocopying is 25¢ per page.
Children under twelve who wish to use the computers must be accompanied by a parent. A child 12 to 14 years old must have a signed permission from his/her parent.

It is forbidden to visit websites featuring pornographic or hate material or other unlawful content.
If you wish to be assured of the use of a computer at a specific time, you may call ahead and book it for a maximum of 60 minutes.
If all computers are in use and people are waiting, you must limit yourself to 60 minutes.
